ASSIGNMENT 4 : Photo Restoration

Retouched, Restored and Revitalized

Photoshop is an extremely powerful tool. You can make anything happen by using Drawing and Art to Image Manipulation and like I have demonstrated here: Photo Restoration.

In this assignment I have used many tools and tricks to restore 3 photos. Colour Correction, Red Eye Reduction, Spot Removal and Reconstruction what I have utilized to correct these photos. I have used many methods and tools such as the clone stamp, copy/paste, blending tools, healing brush, Dodge, Burn and Sponge tool. Also Hue, Colour Balance and Levels. Here are some examples of the work I've done.

The hint was leading to the Red Eye but to me the biggest issue was the shadow. The Red Eye is a problem but the shadow draws your eye. There is also hot spots throughout the face. This was a tough picture to edit but a fun one.

I removed the shadow by painting in a new chin and re textured with other cheek + texture patterns in PS. Used the Red Eye tool. Created a custom fill and blended it to remove the hotspots. Finnished it with some clone stamp touch ups.
After trying this a few time I decided to leave some of the flaws because if you photoshop too much, it looks like someone with too much facial plastic surgery.  Both Thumbnail download speeds = 1 sec. at 56k.

I find colour correction some of the hardest photo editing. It really is in the eye of the beholder. To me this photo was too bright and over saturated which takes away some of the detail.

I crushed the white levels, then lowered the saturation. Without knowing what this plant actually looks like, I colour correct based on the leaves. I added a mask to blend it to bring back some detail in the spots along the petals.
Colour correction can easily get out of hand. What I like to do is make sure to save multiple versions and then go back to see which one looks the most realistic. Both Thumbnail download speeds = 1 sec. at 56k.

This was a tough one. There are so many examples of what the stones look like; stripping the colour and then replacing it can be a bit tricky. The flare not only creates colour change but also hot spots. Some textures needed to be added.

I used the lasso tool, desaturated the flare, then used colour balance to match the surrounding rocks. Pasted some texture on top of the stones. Used the Burn for shadows. Copied and pasted sky over the flare near the sun and rays.
You have to be careful using the clone stamp tool. With the soft edges you will create a blurry finish. If your image has a lot of detail of texture be sure to use the least amount of feathering. When dealing with gradients, like in the sky, the clone stamp tool and the healing brush can create new problems. I had to cut and past and rotate. Those tools work great for getting rid of spots. Both Thumbnail download speeds = 1 sec. at 56k.

Overall I have learn how important naming conventions are, how reducing file size can speed up web download speed and like all of Janice's class how important it is to carefully follow instructions. I say that but I'm sure I missed something. Overall Photshop is a blast I like had so much fun a tried a few more photo's in case anyone is intereseted you can check them out. on the link below.
